Wheat germ is at the center of a grain of wheat and is responsible for the growth and development of the new plant sprout. It has a delicious nutty flavour, and is packed with nutrition.
Although only a small part of the wheat seed, the germ is concentrated with nutrients including niacin, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin E, folate, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, iron and zinc. Wheat germ also contains protein, fiber and some fat.
With wheat germ, freshness is what counts. Because the natural oils are retained in wheat germ, refrigerate it to maintain freshness and nutrition.
How to Enjoy:
Sprinkle it on top of your cereal. Raw wheat germ by itself is a little bland, so mix it with your favourite cereal. It will add some crunchy texture and provide nutrients without you even realizing you’re eating it.
Add to your favourite smoothies.
Use as an ice cream topping. Instead of sprinkling crumbled cookies or chocolate chips on top of your ice cream, use raw wheat germ. It will provide the same crunchiness factor but also add fiber and nutrients.
